In GCC we use the CALM Routine initiative for teaching, learning, and behaviour across the school: the. This routine brings together consistent classroom expectations with a strong focus on student wellbeing, readiness to learn, and positive behaviour.
It sets out 4 simple expectations for the start of every lesson, aligning closely with our school ethos of Be There and Care. It promotes punctuality, preparedness, respect, and positive engagement, behaviours that reflect care for oneself, for others, and for the learning environment.
The routine also links directly to several of our DEIS priority areas, including:
  • Improving Attendance:CALM reinforces punctuality by setting the expectation that students enter on time and settle quickly, supporting our DEIS Attendance targets.
  • Raising Attainment & Engagement: By increasing time on task and helping students focus immediately, the routine supports improved achievement and engagement.
  • Supporting Wellbeing: Predictable routines reduce anxiety and help students feel safe and settled. This is especially important for students with SEN/ASD, as clear, repeated language helps them understand exactly what to do.
  • Strengthening Teaching & Learning Consistency:CALM supports consistency across classrooms so all students meet the same expectations, regardless of the teacher or subject.
  • Promoting Positive Behaviour: The routine provides shared expectations that align with our DEIS Behaviour targets and supports a strong school culture and ethos.
