Transition Year Programme
Transition Year (TY) is an optional one-year programme offered at Galway Community College, providing students with a valuable opportunity to develop personally, socially, and academically before beginning the Leaving Certificate cycle. As a bridge between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle, TY encourages students to become more independent, responsible, and reflective learners while exploring new interests, skills, and experiences. The programme is designed in line with the Transition Year Programme Statement, introduced nationally from September 2025. Transition Year students engage in a broad and balanced programme that combines core academic subjects with practical, creative, and career-focused learning experiences.
At Galway Community College, we view Transition Year as a time for exploration, growth, and opportunity. Through a broad range of learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom, students are encouraged to challenge themselves, discover their strengths, and develop the confidence needed for future success.
Personal Growth
Transition Year provides students with opportunities to develop self-confidence, resilience, leadership, and wellbeing. Through participation in school initiatives, extracurricular activities, workshops, and new experiences, students are encouraged to build positive relationships, develop greater self-awareness, and become active participants in their own personal development.
Being a Learner
A key aim of our TY programme is to foster curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. Students engage in a variety of innovative learning experiences that promote critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. TY allows students to take greater ownership of their learning and to develop skills and habits that will support them throughout Senior Cycle and beyond.
Civic and Community Engagement
Students are encouraged to make a positive contribution to their school and wider community. Through volunteering, fundraising activities, environmental projects, educational visits, and community-based initiatives, students gain an appreciation of active citizenship, social responsibility, and the importance of working collaboratively with others.
As part of our Transition Year programme, students have opportunities to participate in the Erasmus+ project, providing valuable international learning experiences. Through travel, cultural exchange, and collaboration with students from other European countries, participants develop greater cultural awareness, communication skills, independence, and confidence. These experiences broaden students' perspectives, encourage active European citizenship, and create lasting memories and friendships.
Career Exploration
Career exploration is a central element of the TY experience. Students have opportunities to investigate a range of educational and career pathways through work experience, guest speakers, workshops, visits to third-level institutions, and engagement with employers and industry professionals. These experiences help students make informed decisions about their future while developing valuable workplace and organisational skills
Our Transition Year programme offers students the time and space to mature, develop new skills, and gain experiences that will benefit them in school and in later life. By supporting personal growth, learner development, community involvement, and career awareness Galway Community College aims to provide every student with a rewarding and meaningful Transition Year experience.
