Life, Community and Work (LCW)

We are delighted to offer Life, Community and Work (LCW), a new senior cycle subject being introduced for fifth-year students from September 2026. LCW replaces the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) and is designed to support students in developing the knowledge, skills and values needed for life beyond school. The subject provides opportunities for students to engage with their local communities and the wider world while developing a deeper understanding of their own strengths, interests and future aspirations. It reflects the vision of senior cycle education by helping students prepare not only for further study and employment, but also for active participation in society.

At the heart of LCW are two interconnected modules: Me and My Future and Community and Work. Through these modules, students explore their personal development, wellbeing, strengths and ambitions while gaining a greater understanding of the pathways available to them after school, including higher education, apprenticeships, training, entrepreneurship and employment. They develop important life skills such as self-reflection, decision-making, goal setting and planning for the future.

LCW also encourages students to become active and informed members of their communities. Through engagement with real-world issues and learning about modern workplaces, students develop valuable transferable skills including communication, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving. A strong emphasis on experiential learning helps students connect classroom learning with everyday life, building the confidence, resilience and sense of responsibility that will support them throughout their future journeys.
