Course Outline

This course is designed to provide the skills needed to peruse a career in Art and Design or progress into further education with a comprehensive portfolio.


GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

We advise non-EU citizens living outside Ireland to contact the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service on to ensure the course you are considering applying for is eligible for a student visa. Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

This Module is an exciting, hands on experience designed to develop a proficiency in a wide range of materials both natural and man made. Materials are integrated into other areas of study such as drawing, painting, 2D & 3D ideas.
This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce a range of vector documents containing text and graphics. The learner will train on Industry standard graphic design software.
The learner will engage in a design process from briefing, through research and development, to presentation and execution. Research a design brief by collecting, selecting and collating primary and secondary source material. Generate a wide range of design solutions through visual and verbal brainstorming, lateral thinking and exploration of materials
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce a range of documents containing text and graphic images from design briefing to printing, using a Desktop Publishing (DTP) system.
The learner will experiment with a wide range of drawing techniques, including linear, tonal, gestural and perspective studies. Drawing in 2 and 3 dimensions, and in a wide range of media, to analyse, record and interpret a variety of subjects, including objects and life forms from the natural and manufactured environments.
This module is devised to facilitate the learner to develop the necessary technical & visual communication skills to acquire an understanding to the area of graphic design.
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Progression Routes

This Art, Design & Portfolio Preparation PLC course is devised in such a way as to provide the applicant with opportunities to develop both in visual expression, communication and cultural diversity. Briefs are written to prepare portfolios of visual art work which are of exceptional standard and ready for assessment into 3rd Level institutions in Ireland and abroad.

Career Opportunities

This course enables students to explore painting, I.T., creating moving images or inventing new ideas.

Completing this course can be a gateway into diverse areas within the Design world i.e. Film Making, Advertising, Design, Media Design & Visual Communications.

It also prepares the student to enter the commercial world of Graphic Design, introduced through the Work Experience module and provides the student with the skills needed to succeed in the ever-growing sector.
