Course Outline

Successful students gain an industry standard in Pilates Teaching and up-skill as a fitness professional. On successful completion, students will receive an ITEC Diploma and a component QQI level 6 award in Sport Recreation and Exercise Studies. This qualification will equip learners with the practical experience and knowledge to gain successful employment in the sport and fitness industry. There is also the potential to start your own fitness business.


GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Additional Course Costs €500. This includes; ITEC Diploma in Pilates & Exercise Specialist.

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

Work Experience

Students gain invaluable experience working directly with pilates instructors and applying the knowledge in a range of population settings.

Special Features

Additional qualifications are available for eligible students and awarded by the following accredited bodies.

These include;
ITEC, NCEF, National Sporting Governing Bodies, Galway City Sports Partnership, Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and Sport Ireland.

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of a QQI Level 5 Award in Sport & Recreation Studies 5M5146 or equivalent and Interview.

Course Modules

This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and or in an instructional capacity in an exercise, health and fitness environment.
This module is designed to enable learners to establish community health programmes and raise community awareness of Health related issues.
The module is designed to provide the learner with a sound knowledge of the concepts of nutrition, in relation to the energy sources and amounts required for active living, exercise, sport and weight management.
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

By completing the course, students have the opportunity to achieve up to 390 CAO points and can apply to 3rd Level Colleges.

Galway Community College have a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU) with GMIT. Students who qualify with Sport, Recreation and Exercise Award may gain entry to Sport Science in GMIT

Galway Community College are accredited with University of Limerick and can offer the ‘Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness (CEHF) to eligible students, which enables them to progress onto either a diploma/ degree course in UL.
