Course Outline

Successful students gain an industry standard in Personal Training and component QQI award in Sports Recreation and Exercise Studies. This qualification will equip learners with the practical experience and knowledge to gain successful employment in the sport and fitness industry.


Fees

GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Additional Course Costs €500. This includes; ITEC Diploma in Personal Training ITEC Award in Strength And Conditioning

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

Work Experience

Students gain invaluable experience working directly with personal trainers and applying the knowledge in a range of population settings.


Special Features

Additional qualifications are available for eligible students and awarded by the following accredited bodies.

These include; ITEC, NCEF, National Sporting Governing Bodies, Galway City Sports Partnership, Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and Sport Ireland.

Course Modules

This module aims to provide learners with knowledge and understanding of the role and function of management in the business environment, in addition to developing effective management skills.
This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and or in an instructional capacity in an exercise, health and fitness environment.
This module is designed to enable learners to establish community health programmes and raise community awareness of Health related issues.

Unit 415 - Delivering personal training sessions

This programme module aims to assist the learner to gain an understanding of the structure, procedures, functioning and rules and regulations within the sport, recreation and exercise sector.
The module is designed to provide the learner with a sound knowledge of the concepts of nutrition, in relation to the energy sources and amounts required for active living, exercise, sport and weight management.
This module is designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to change behaviour in a sporting context. It will enable participants to develop an understanding of the psychological principles that underpin coaching techniques. It is aimed at individuals who are working with teams or athletes and participants who choose to work in the leisure industry.
This programme module aims to provide the learner with a comprehensive range of skills with detailed theoretical understanding of a general supervisory nature of the work placement in a specific vocational area.

Progression Routes

By completing the course, students have the opportunity to achieve up to 390 CAO points and can apply to 3rd Level Colleges.

Galway Community College have a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU) with GMIT. Students who qualify with Sport, Recreation and Exercise Award may gain entry to Sport Science in GMIT https://www.gmit.ie/natural-sciences/bachelor-science-hons-sport-and-exercise-science

Galway Community College are accredited with University of Limerick and can offer the ‘Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness (CEHF) to eligible students, which enables them to progress onto either a diploma/ degree course in UL. https://www.ncef.ie/
