Course Outline

This course is designed to give students the training required to work in the sport & leisure industry. Participants develop a high level of knowledge in physical fitness and coaching.


GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Additional Course Costs €300

  • NGB Accreditation & Certification

Additional certification may incur additional fee

Work Experience

This course provides the student with the opportunity to work with local gyms and leisure centres. Links developed here may benefit the student in their vocational area. Eligible students may also benefit from coaching experience in local schools.

Special Features

Additional qualifications are available for eligible students and awarded by the following accredited bodies. These include; ITEC, NCEF, National Sporting Governing Bodies, Galway City Sports Partnership, Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and Sport Ireland.

Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the skills, knowledge and competency to plan, implement and evaluate coaching sessions for the young basketball player.
This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
Topics include anatomy and physiology, class instruction, healthy lifestyle and wellness, circuits, exercise to music, step aerobics, flexibility and body conditioning
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the technical, tactical and team knowledge and skills to coach children, youths and adults in football /hurling.
Topics covered include components of a balanced diet and sports specific nutrition.
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competency in technical, tactical and physical aspects of the game of soccer. The learner will be enabled to deliver coaching sessions under appropriate supervision to participants between the ages of 6 and 12.
This programme module aims to equip the learner with knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and how it is relavent to participation in sports and exercise
Topics include issues in sport such as history of sport, gender, equality, drugs, media, sponsorship. Practical element covers circuit training, resistance training and body conditioning classes
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Progression Routes

By completing the course, students have the opportunity to achieve up to 390 CAO points and can apply to 3rd Level Colleges.

The holder of a QQI level 5 Certificate in Sport, Recreation and Exercise can progress to QQI Level 6 Sport, Recreation and Exercise here in Galway Community College.

Galway Community College have a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU) with GMIT. Students who qualify with Sport, Recreation and Exercise Award may gain entry to Sport Science in GMIT

Galway Community College are accredited with University of Limerick and can offer the ‘Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness (CEHF) to eligible students, which enables them to progress onto either a diploma/ degree course in UL.
