Course Outline

This practical one-year business accounting course is designed to provide an excellent foundation for learners wishing to progress to Level 7/8 Business Degree Programmes at Third Level. This course will allow the learner to build skills in accounting, bookkeeping, marketing, communications and information technology. This course also provide learners with the core business skills required to entry the workplace.


GCC Student Services Fee of €175 applies to all learners.
€200 Government Levy Fee applies to all learners except:

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).
  • Those in receipt of a SUSI Grant.
  • Those on a VTOS scheme.

An exam free of €50 for QQI Level 5 and €80 for QQI Level 6 applies to all learners except

  • Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowance.
  • Medical Card Holders (valid at time of Registration).

Non EU Students are subject to an International Fee.

We advise non-EU citizens living outside Ireland to contact the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service on to ensure the course you are considering applying for is eligible for a student visa. Non-EU citizens living in Ireland are welcome to apply and require a PPS number (Personal Public Service Number). Work Experience

Work experience takes place one day per week throughout the academic year in areas of accounting, marketing, customer service and web design.

Special Features

Regular speakers from Galway Businesses in the areas of Accountancy, Marketing, PR, Web Design & Customer Service. Students will avail of the most up to date software both for Windows and Mac.

Entry Requirements

QQI Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Course Modules

Learn how to produce and maintain accurate bookkeeping records for a range of organisations, using manual and computerised systems.
To equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the administration requirements of a range of organisations to enable the learner to operate effectively under supervision in a variety of administration contexts.
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the understanding of the value of the customer service discipline as well as knowledge and skills to provide effective customer service within a work, social or voluntary environment, operating independently or as part of a team.
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce a range of documents containing text and graphic images from design briefing to printing, using a Desktop Publishing (DTP) system.
The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to operate effectively in a range of marketing related contexts using the principles and concepts underpinning marketing practice.
This module aims to educate the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the role, functions and techniques of Public Relations within a range of contexts.
Learn how to construct, test and maintain a range of webpages and sites using HTML CSS and Adobe Dreamweaver.
This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Progression Routes

By completing the course, students have the opportunity to achieve up to 390 CAO points and can apply to 3rd Level Colleges.

The holder of a QQI level 5 Certificate in Business may also progress to QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Business here in Galway Community College.

On completion of the Level 6 course, students can gain entry to 2nd Year in Level 7/8 Business in GMIT.
